Introduction to the Treaty Series

South African Cyber Treaty Series

The South African Cyber Treaty Series arose as an extension to Arnold Pronto's Master's thesis, entitled "The Reception of International Law Under the New South African Constitutional Order" (unpublished), May 1997, completed in fulfillment of the Masters Degree in Law and Diplomacy, at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Boston.

It aims to provide a comprehensive, and up to date, list of treaties South Africa has entered into, with, where possible, links to full text versions placed on the internet, as well as to ratification information. It makes no attempt at covering bilateral agreements, focusing, instead, on multilateral conventions.

The treaty series is based primarily on the United Nations Multilateral Treaties Deposited with the Secretary-General, and is arranged according to the categories found in the United Nations Treaty Series. Several additional topics, e.g. intellectual property and civil aviation, for which the United Nations does not act as depositary, have also been included.

The treaty series has been designed primarily as a resource tool for practitioners and judges considering the international law provisions of the 1996 South African Constitution. Likewise, for diplomats, the South African Cyber Treaty Series offers a guide to the international obligations South Africa has undertaken as a sovereign state and can be used as an indication of its emerging role on the international scene.

While an attempt has been made to present a comprehensive listing, given the relative scarcity of information, the South African Cyber Treaty Series does not claim to be complete, and will be updated periodically. Likewise, while special care has been taken to properly reflect the information obtained from the relevant sources, the South African Cyber Treaty Series cannot vouch for the accuracy of those sources.
